food rules, another

Michael Pollan makes it easy to watch what you eat in his little book, with big print, Food Rules: An Eater’s Manual. Here are a few more pithy sayings that ring true to me. (Italicized material is quoted from the book.)

Eat when you are hungry, not when you are bored. (I would add, when you are stressed or tired, find another way to get some relief, like exercising or resting briefly.)

Consult your gut. He expands on this by refering to what he calls Grandmother’s saying, “Your eyes are bigger than your stomach.”

The banquet is in the first bite.

Buy smaller plates and glasses. (I would add, use your salad or dessert plates.)

Eat meals.

Don’t get your food from the same place your car does.

Plant a vegetable garden if you have the space, a window box if you don’t.

Cook.

Break the rules once in a while.

That’s it! Take care and eat well —
