support groups

The Winter 2011 issue of Newton Wellesley Hospital’s Family HealthSource includes a list of support groups that meet at the hospital. There are 29!

Support groups range from Al-Anon for family and friends of alcoholics and AA  to “You Are Not Alone: Straight Spouse Network.” In between is an encyclopedia of illnesses that plague Americans: asthma and allergies, alopecia, attention deficit disorder, cancer, cardiac disease, diabetes, frontotemporal dementia, gastric bypass, heart failure, myasthenia gravis, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s, vestibular disorder, and mental illness.

Additionally groups offer support for breastfeeding, childbirth loss, death of a spouse or partner, caring for a partner with chronic illness or a family member with mental illness, and overeating.

The front cover is a photograph of tablets, presumably medication. I can’t help wondering about the connection between the pills and the diseases modern medicine manages but doesn’t cure.
