rough road

I was waiting at a red light behind a semi tractor trailer at a very long red light. So long that I had time to notice an inscription on the back of the cab, two lines slightly arching one above the other in a lovely script:

“Let the road be rough and dreary and the end far out of sight.”

Is this as negative as it sounds? I read those lines, reread them, and jotted them down because one rarely sees something so downcast in a display intended for the public. Advertising messages are upbeat, signage on buildings and vehicles is inviting, and most bumper stickers that aren’t political tout the bright side of life.

I’m still puzzling about that message written like a wish.
