Consider the milieu, a hopeful new approach

In today’s Wall Street Journal (April 13, 2010) Jonathan Rockoff interviews Dr. Robert Weinberg, cancer researcher with the Whitehead Institute for Biomedical Research in Cambridge, Mass, about the partnership of tumor cells and our bodies’ surrounding tissue cells. Understanding “cancer microenvironments” is expected to lead to treatments that can interrupt signaling from the stroma, composed of formerly normal cells that surround the tumor, to bone marrow and other cells that encourage tumors to grow and migrate. I am very glad to hear researchers are onto a new approach. I do believe our bodies participate in the cancer infiltration, and there lies a way for us to participate in our own healing. Through nutrition and other modalities, we can alter the milieu that enabled cancer to take hold and increase the possibility of healing. Why not try?
